Swimming Pool Heating:
Heating a swimming pool can consume a lot of energy. And this can add up to high
heating bills. Here are some ways to improve your swimming pool's heating efficiency.
Install a High Efficiency
Extenda Swim Wood Fired Heating System:
If you plan to install a conventional pool heating system, shop around for a high efficiency
pool heater, as well as pumps and motors. See our swimming pool heating section
for more information.
Use a Pool Cover:
All swimming pools lose heat through evaporation. To minimize evaporation, use a pool cover on
your swimming pool when it's not in use. You can reduce energy consumption by 50 to 70 percent.
Manage the Water Temperature:
Carefully consider your pool's water temperature. Each degree rise in the temperature can cost
you an additional 10 percent if you have a conventional heating system. The National Swimming Pool
Foundation recommends 78º-80ºF for active swimming and 82º-84ºF for general use. Lower the water
temperature or turn off the pool heater when the swimming pool will not be used for several days.
It's a myth that you'll use more energy to heat the pool back up to a comfortable temperature than
you saved by lowering the temperature or turning off the pool heater.
Maintain Your Pool Heater:
Tune up your pool heater annually. A properly maintained pool heater is more efficient.
